about

"an empty field at dawn, a flood of brilliant yellow morning sunbeams about to flow over the feild as the day breaks, but before that, for less than a fleeting movement, something just slightly more solid than a hovering black mist floats, weaving it's way through the tallest grasses and flowers ... It seems to be looking for something, but it cannot find it and it knows that it must flee before the first Ray of sun...

It is no mere morning though, this is the first day of the harvest and the men women and children have risen early today to make preparations and get an early start on what looks to be the best crop in years. Suddenly a child runs into the feild that the darkness is slowly passing over and catches a glimpse of her, he Stops, startled he Squints and believes he can make out a woman's face suspended in the mist, her eyes are as wide as his as she, or it, shyly turns and speeds away from the child in the direction of the forest and simultaneously seems to dissipate into the morning air... The child runs over to where she was hovering and there in the grass, now flooded by the red dawn light, he finds a tiny faun, just barely able to take it's first steps.... He calls out to his sister who has just caught up to him to come and look at the faun but as soon as she gets there the faun begins to straighten up and soon begins to grow into a grown Deer and then a full buck with delicate but powerful horns, which he thrusts into the air to peirce the morning sun. the now fully grown forest spirit let's out a cry that sounds like a crystal gong split the air, the resonant vibrations shake the world, a pristine shreek that proves that this is no stag of the valley but a powerful spirit here to bless the harvest morning!

The girl takes her brother by the hand and motions for him to slowly back away... She senses something is wrong but she doesn't want to scare her brother

The stag looks down and sees them. its eyes meet those of the little boy, he feels terrified just as much as a tremendous Joy that he cannot fathom... And his sister knows: this was not meant to happen: this is not a spirit here to bless the Harvest but one of the hallows that should have been banished by the coming of the morning light....

The little boy feels a lightness, first in his feet and then all over his body and he begins to hover towards the stag. His sister grabs his arm but it too seems to start to unweave and waver, it was as she fears, and she knows she can no longer look directly at her brother because now he has been claimed as one of them... She knew that as he floats he will be riding that stag back into the underworld but she is not ready to say goodby

...years and years and years later as she is an old woman, having finally learned to except the horrors of that morning and the nightmare of coming back to a busy and working Village with a report of what happened and the need to explain to her mother the truth....

She knew, that night and the dawn that it became, we did not respect death, she who's job it is on all hallows Eve to bring the dead back to whence they came just as it's her job to bring us home to eternal rest, no, instead we sought the break of day as if we were welcomed there, refusing to respect the dance of those things best left to their own devices.... Knowing also, that one day she shall meet them again, her brother, the spirit of the valley and death, in that same feild. But moving in the other direction
